Red ribbon celebration at Lake Eola

The excitement grew as each of the 27 schools and over 1300 students arrived at beautiful Lake Eola in downtown Orlando, Florida for the 10th Annual Red Ribbon Event hosted by the Orange County Drug-Free Coalition. The entertainment included the Step Team from Gotha Middle School, the Drum Line from Timber Creek High, the Jazz Band from Corner Lake Middle and the Bravettes, cheerleaders from Boone High. In addition, music was provided by a local radio station and a pre-show with an anti-tobacco message was given to the students waiting for the arrival of other schools, by the Florida National Guard. The seven Red Ribbon Certified Schools from 2009-2010 were presented their school flags by Carol Ann Duncan, the head of the local Department of Children and Families, who spoke about her brother, a DEA Agent who just lost his partner in the line of duty to someone who made a bad choice to use drugs and then resist arrest when approached by her brother and his partner. The students were deeply moved by this story. The student winners of the Orange County Drug Free Poster and Essay/Poem Contest were announced and the winners were displayed and read. The students got a healthy lunch from Subway and loaded back on the buses after a joyous and exciting Red Ribbon Celebration Event.
